Losing the ability to download files from the Internet could potentially have a major impact on your productivity, leaving you unable to access important Web pages and other resources. Causes can range from improper hardware connections or software settings. Tracing the source of the problem requires testing both the network and computer systematically.

Initial Checks

If you notice that your downloads have stopped working, first check your network connections. If you use an external modem, confirm that it's still powered on and connected to both your router and your external Internet line. Check your router's power, too, and ensure that any wired connections between it and your devices are still in place. As an early troubleshooting step, unplug both the modem and router and plug them back in to reset them, and then re-test your downloads by opening up an Internet page in your browser.

Wireless

Check your wireless signal for faults by connecting your computer to your router with a cable and re-testing your downloads. Keep your wireless devices away from sources of electromagnetic noise such as LCD monitors, and keep dense materials such as metal out of your signal's path. Both of these factors can interfere with Wi-Fi signals, potentially resulting in an inability to browse. In addition, you may get a stronger Wi-Fi signal by changing the wireless channel your router or access point uses to transmit.

Browser

Test your downloads in an alternative browser or email client if you have one. If the alternative program works, your issues are probably being caused by a fault with the original browser software rather than the network connection. Delete cookies and temporary Internet files, and clear the browser's cache. If this doesn't work, reinstall the browser if possible. Also run a virus scan, as networking faults can be a symptom of virus infection.

Router

Routers use automatically generated routing tables to ensure that they send data to the correct destination. An error in one of these tables could result in download traffic never making it to your computer. To fix this, return the router to factory default settings. This is usually done through a reset hole on the device's control panel, or via an option in the router's menu. If you reset the router, you'll usually need to re-enter any settings you had previously altered on the device.

If you have iTunes installed on your computer, choose your device to update to the latest version of iTunes.

If you have a Mac

With macOS 10.14 Mojave, iTunes comes bundled with macOS. To get the latest version of iTunes, update the software on your Mac: Go to Apple () menu > System Preferences, then click Software Update.

If you can’t update to macOS 10.14 Mojave, you might still be able to get some updates for iTunes (up to iTunes 12.8). Open the App Store on your Mac, then click Updates at the top of the App Store window. If any iTunes updates are available, click Install.

If you have a PC

Depending on the version of iTunes that you have, there are different ways to update. If you don't have iTunes installed on your computer, download the latest version from Apple's website or get it from the Microsoft Store (Windows 10).

If you downloaded iTunes from Apple's website

  1. Open iTunes.
  2. From the menu bar at the top of the iTunes window, choose Help > Check for Updates.
  3. Follow the prompts to install the latest version.

If Check for Updates isn't an option in the Help menu, you downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store.

If you downloaded iTunes from the Microsoft Store

Versions of iTunes from the Microsoft Store update automatically when new versions are released.

You can also check for updates through the Microsoft Store.
