To claim a refund for a defective product, you may have to send in the UPC label along with the product. UPC labels are required for all products sold in the United States. Companies use these labels to track sales while retailers use the labels to monitor inventory and verify price. Find the UPC label on the item in which you want a refund. Contact the manufacturer if you find multiple bar codes on the package to determine which one you need to claim a refund.

Remove the UPC label from the item. Use a pair of scissors, small utility knife or tear the bar code from the package. Take a digital photo of the UPC label and scan it into your computer to make a printed copy if you cannot remove the label without damaging the bar code. In most cases, the manufacturer will accept a photocopy that is readable.

Visit the manufacturer's website or follow the instructions provided on the item package or instructions to learn where to send the UPC label. You may also have to send a copy or original of your purchase receipt, the product itself and a short explanation of why you want a refund. Contact the manufacturer if refund information is not provided on the packaging or on the company website. You will need an address to which to send the UPC and other items required for a refund.

Place the UPC label, receipt and explanation in an envelope and send it to the manufacturer. Send the product in a separate box or container, if necessary.

- Keep a photocopy of the UPC label and copy of your receipt for your files until you receive a refund.
- It may take several weeks to receive a refund by mail.
