Review

If there ever was a concept that didn't deserve to reach fruition, it's Saturday Morning: Cartoons' Greatest Hits. A collection of alternative rock bands covering the theme songs to '60s and '70s television cartoons, Saturday Morning is the perfect example of an album that was completely constructed by a record company. Most of these themes are simply nostalgia pieces and work better as original recordings, not songs. If the featured bands were able to offer a new spin on these cartoon themes, perhaps Saturday Morning would have been entertaining. However, most of the bands simply play the songs as they were written, only with louder guitars, which is neither cute, funny, nor ironic. A handful of tracks, most notably Matthew Sweet's 'Scooby Doo' and Juliana Hatfield and Tanya Donelly's 'Josie and the Pussycats,' are entertaining, but that's because they try to capture the kitschy charm of the cartoons. However, the great majority of the record is forced, monotonous, and bland. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
